The Hospital
After Grant was born, it was just a flurry of activity until we left the hospital. Doctors, nurses, lactation consultants and aids were in and out all day every day. It makes getting caught up on our lost night of sleep almost impossible. I was so tired on Sunday afternoon I fell asleep on the lactation consultant. Oops. We also had many visitors to meet Grant! It was fun to be able to “show off” our perfect baby. The busy hospital experience was worth it to make sure Grant and I were both healthy and doing well. We had a great experience at the hospital. The nurses, doctors and lactation consultants were awesome.

Right after birth, we noticed Grant had a tongue tie clear to the tip of the tongue. This made it almost impossible for Grant to latch on. We talked to our pediatrician Monday morning and Dr. Sullivan basically told us the ENT doctor won’t come to the hospital; and we would have to wait to fix it outpatient once we were discharged. After a little pushing from the lactation consultant and Greg and I verbalizing our opinion, Dr. Rinehart came to help us out. It was a simple and quick procedure which made a huge difference for Grant and helped breastfeeding immensely.

Grant was also a little shy about peeing once out of the womb. The doctor wouldn’t circumcise Grant until he peed, just to make sure his kidneys were working. We supplemented with formula and he still he still had not peed Monday afternoon. Dr. Sullivan (hospital pediatrician) ordered for him to have a renal ultrasound. As the ultrasound technician was setting up, he peed! Just in time. Grant just wanted to keep us on our toes. 🙂 We quickly cancelled the order and told the tech to pack up so we didn’t have to pay for a pointless ultrasound. He got his circumcision shortly after we were still able to leave the hospital on time.

We left Wednesday afternoon with a crabby and, most likely, hungry baby. I was still unsure if I was breastfeeding correctly and/or if Grant was latching appropriately. I was so unaware of the fact that breastfeeding was a job. Only MY job. I was the sole person in charge of making sure our baby was fed. It seemed overwhelming. We had been supplementing with formula due to Grants lack of urination. He still had only peed once at the hospital. This was nice so Greg was able to help me out with a few feedings. We knew we had a lot to figure out when we got home, but we were ready.
